ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – In a strong reaffirmation of their enduring partnership, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a pivotal phone call on Friday, during which both leaders emphasized the critical importance of reviving oil exports and strengthening bilateral ties amid heightened regional uncertainty.
According to an official readout of the call, Prime Minister Barzani and Secretary Rubio discussed recent developments across the Middle East and stressed the shared strategic interest in enhancing cooperation between Erbil and Washington.
The conversation underscored not only the long-standing friendship between the Kurdistan Region and the United States but also the mutual commitment to building a future grounded in security, economic resilience, and democratic values.
A central focus of the dialogue was the Kurdistan Region’s suspended oil exports through the Turkish port of Ceyhan.
Both leaders agreed that restarting these exports is a matter of urgency and strategic significance, especially in light of global energy market volatility and the Kurdistan Region’s critical economic needs.
Secretary Rubio praised the Kurdistan Region for its steadfast role in upholding regional stability and for providing a haven for ethnic and religious minorities during years of turmoil.
“The Kurdistan Region plays a vital role in ensuring regional stability and security,” Rubio said, according to the readout.
He also acknowledged Erbil’s longstanding cooperation with the U.S. on counterterrorism and humanitarian efforts, especially during the height of the war against ISIS.
For his part, Prime Minister Barzani reaffirmed the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to deepening its alliance with the United States, expressing gratitude for continued American support across military, diplomatic, and development spheres.
Long-Term Strategic Partnership
According to the regional spokesperson for the US State Department Samuel Warburg, the Biden-Trump administration transition has not altered Washington’s longstanding commitment to the Kurdistan Region. Previously in an interview with Kurdistan24, Warburg reiterated the United States’ intent to “continue close coordination with the KRG and support the Peshmerga forces as part of the international coalition to defeat ISIS.”
He further affirmed that Washington is determined to strengthen bilateral cooperation and ensure Erbil remains a stable and reliable partner in a volatile Middle East.
Coordinated Path Forward
The Prime Minister and Secretary of State concluded their conversation with an agreement to maintain open channels of communication and strategic coordination on matters of mutual interest, particularly in defense, energy, and regional security.
Their dialogue highlights the enduring relevance of the U.S.-KRG relationship at a time when both parties are navigating shifting geopolitical dynamics. As efforts continue to resume oil exports and stabilize Iraq’s economic trajectory, the Kurdistan Region’s role as a bridge of moderation and partnership remains firmly anchored in its alliance with the United States.
