ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Sunday welcomed a delegation of US Congress members in Erbil to discuss regional developments and ways to further enhance ties between the Kurdistan Region and the United States.
The delegation included Representatives Adam Smith, Michael Baumgartner, Sarah Jacobs, Wesley Bell, and George T. Whitesides, along with accompanying staff, according to a statement from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
Discussions focused on the current situation in Iraq and the wider region, with both sides reaffirming the importance of continued cooperation. The US lawmakers underlined the strategic significance of the Kurdistan Region and reiterated Washington’s enduring support for the area.
Prime Minister Barzani expressed his appreciation for the United States’ consistent backing and briefed the delegation on the KRG’s ongoing reforms in the energy, electricity, and banking sectors.
Both sides emphasized the pressing need to form a new cabinet for the KRG to address key challenges and push forward with governance initiatives.
The meeting also touched on the Kurdistan Region’s relationship with the federal government in Baghdad, the resumption of oil exports, and regional issues, including the situation in Syria and the peace process in Turkey.
