PM Masrour Barzani: Kurdistan Region Opposes Any Attempt to Destabilize the Region

“Should we succeed in helping consolidate peace and stability, that would be a major achievement. But Kurdistan must not become a party to these unfortunate and convoluted conflicts," said Kurdistan region PM Masrour Barzani.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani stated on Wednesday that the Region categorically rejects any attempt to destabilize the Middle East, stressing the need for prudent diplomacy and cooperation amid an era of sweeping geopolitical shifts.

His remarks came during a keynote panel at the Ninth Sulaimani Forum 2025, where he addressed an audience of international diplomats, policymakers, and academics, shedding light on the unfolding transformations in Syria, the aftermath of the recent U.S. elections, and the broader regional and global context.

“We are not isolated from these rapid developments,” Barzani remarked. “However, we must engage with them in a way that protects our interests. In the Kurdistan Region, we remain committed to a transparent policy that, under no circumstances, supports any attempt to sow instability in the region.”

The Prime Minister pointed to the emergence of a new U.S. administration with a markedly different approach to Middle Eastern affairs, emphasizing that “the ongoing conflicts and geopolitical realignments — both direct and indirect — cast a significant impact over our entire region. Thus, adaptation is not a choice, but a necessity.”

PM Barzani underscored the Region’s preference for playing a constructive role, particularly through unifying rival factions and bolstering peace efforts. “Should we succeed in helping consolidate peace and stability, that would be a major achievement. But Kurdistan must not become a party to these unfortunate and convoluted conflicts — neither in the interest of our people nor that of our neighbors.”

Shared Vision with Washington
Touching on the Kurdistan Region’s relationship with the United States, Barzani reaffirmed its enduring strength. “We enjoy a long-standing and institutional partnership with the U.S., especially with key figures in the current administration,” he said. “The Secretary of State is a longtime friend, having been among the foremost supporters of Kurdish rights during his time in the Senate. We also maintain close ties with other influential policymakers.”

PM Barzani acknowledged that while both sides share a mutual aspiration for peace, there are differing views on how to achieve it. “What we hear and see from American officials does not contradict our vision,” he said. “Yet, their policy seems increasingly inclined toward the use of force. If that is their chosen course, one must ask: How can other deal with this approach”

Kurdistan’s Guiding Principles
Emphasizing a balanced approach, Barzani reiterated that his government remains committed to dialogue and mutual respect in its relations with international partners, especially the United States. “We have always welcomed the opportunity to exchange views with our American counterparts. Our goal is to play a positive role — one rooted in our commitment to peace and the welfare of all peoples in this region, particularly the people of Kurdistan,” he said.
