ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Thursday received Germany’s Ambassador to Iraq, Christiane Hohmann, in Erbil for high-level talks focused on forming the next KRG cabinet, regional cooperation, and political developments in Iraq and beyond, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s office.

The two officials discussed the ongoing efforts to establish a strong and unified new cabinet for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in a timely manner — ideally before the upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections. Both sides emphasized the importance of forming a cohesive government to ensure political stability and effective governance during a transformative period for Iraq and the wider region.

Barzani and Hohmann also underlined the critical need to remove all obstacles and disputes that have hindered the resumption of oil exports from the Kurdistan Region.

Ambassador Hohmann reaffirmed Germany’s continued support for the Peshmerga forces and the Kurdistan Region, expressing Berlin’s desire to further strengthen bilateral relations. She highlighted Germany’s longstanding partnership with the Kurdish people, particularly in areas of security and development.

The meeting also included broader discussions on Iraq’s current political climate and the shifting dynamics across the Middle East. Both officials exchanged views on recent changes in the region, noting that growing uncertainty and geopolitical shifts require stronger international cooperation and dialogue.

This meeting comes at a critical time as the Kurdistan Region prepares for significant political transitions. Internal talks to form a new KRG cabinet have intensified amid expectations that early steps will be taken ahead of Iraq’s national elections. The visit by Germany’s top envoy to Iraq signals continued European engagement in the region, particularly in stabilizing governance structures and supporting security forces like the Peshmerga.

Germany remains a key international partner for the Kurdistan Region, providing both humanitarian aid and military training assistance. Its engagement reflects broader European interest in ensuring that Iraq and the Kurdistan Region remain stable amid shifting alliances and economic challenges across the Middle East.
