ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A German tourist delegation comprising 20 visitors toured the district of Koya in the Kurdistan Region this week as part of an organized itinerary covering prominent historical, religious, and cultural landmarks across the area.

The visit, which was arranged in coordination between the Directorate of Tourism in Koya and regional tour operators, reflects growing international interest in Kurdistan’s emerging tourism sector.

Speaking to Kurdistan 24, Koya Tourism Director Ismail Abdullah said the delegation expressed deep admiration for the region’s landscape, cultural depth, and level of development.

“They were astonished by what they saw during their visit,” Abdullah stated. “Many shared that they did not expect such beauty and progress in Kurdistan.”

Security and peaceful coexistence impress international guests

According to Abdullah, the German tourists praised the security, social harmony, and urban growth they witnessed over their two-day stay. “They described their experience as vastly different from the preconceived notions they had before arriving,” he noted.

Several members of the delegation reportedly expressed their desire to return and explore more of the region in the future. The visit follows similar trips by European and Australian tourists in recent years, with some guests returning for repeat visits.

“In the past year alone, we welcomed 15 tourist groups from countries including Switzerland, Germany, Australia, and the United Kingdom,” Abdullah said. “We anticipate that this number will double this year due to the increasing global interest in Kurdistan’s tourism potential.”

Koya: A rising destination in the Kurdish tourism map

Koya district is home to more than 200 historical, cultural, and religious landmarks, positioning it as one of the Kurdistan Region’s most attractive destinations for international visitors. The town’s blend of ancient heritage and modern hospitality continues to earn praise from foreign tourists who discover a region far removed from conflict-driven stereotypes.

With enhanced tourism infrastructure and sustained promotional efforts, local authorities hope to position Koya—and the broader Kurdistan Region—as a beacon of cultural tourism in the Middle East.
