ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Co-Chair of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM), Tulay Hatimoğulları, affirmed that The Kurdish Unity and Solidarity Conference held in Qamishlo on Saturday, does not contradict Turkey’s peace process.
In response to remarks made by Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli, she asserted that the conference serves the interests of the peoples of Syria and, on the contrary, supports the call of Abdullah Ocalan for peace.
In her statement, Hatimoğulları clarified that her party actively supports democratic resolutions and peaceful initiatives and is committed to the peace process initiated by Ocalan. She further urged Turkish authorities to take swift and meaningful steps to advance this process toward a sustainable outcome.
The Qamishlo conference, which brought together nearly 50 Kurdish political parties and civil society organizations from across Rojava (Western Kurdistan), was described in its closing statement as a foundational moment for Kurdish unity. Participants collectively endorsed what they termed “a shared Kurdish vision,” which, they noted, embodies the collective will of the Kurdish people and presents a practical framework for a just and comprehensive resolution to the Kurdish question within a united Syria.
Meanwhile, MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli accused the conference of being orchestrated by the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and the Kurdish National Council in Syria (KNCS), with support from the United States and France. He criticized the conference’s discussion of federalism and decentralization in Syria and described it as undermining the recent rapprochement between Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander Mazloum Abdi and Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
Bahçeli also called on the PKK to immediately disarm and abide by Abdullah Ocalan’s calls for a peaceful resolution, urging the DEM Party to take a clear stance against the conference.
Hatimoğulları, however, emphasized that the Qamishlo gathering aimed solely at fostering Kurdish unity in Syria and should not be mischaracterized as a threat to Turkey’s domestic agenda. She reaffirmed DEM’s position as a supporter of peace and inclusive political dialogue.
