KRG’s 24/7 Electricity Program Removes Equivalent of 125,000 Cars’ Emissions
“The equivalent of 125,000 vehicles have been taken off the roads — just by shutting down over 700 diesel-generators in neighborhoods across the Kurdistan Region,” Ahmad wrote.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) ongoing 24/7 electricity program, known as the Runaki initiative, has already led to a significant environmental milestone by eliminating the need for over 700 neighborhood diesel generators, effectively reducing emissions equivalent to 125,000 vehicles.
Aziz Ahmad, Deputy Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, shared the update on Sunday in a post on the social media platform X.
“The equivalent of 125,000 vehicles have been taken off the roads — just by shutting down over 700 diesel-generators in neighborhoods across the Kurdistan Region,” Ahmad wrote, adding that the government plans to phase out an additional 6,300 generators as the program expands.
The Runaki initiative, launched as part of the KRG’s broader energy and environmental reform agenda, aims to provide uninterrupted electricity to residents while cutting down on pollution, noise, and reliance on diesel fuel.
Environmental advocates and citizens alike have welcomed the move as a major step toward a cleaner and more sustainable Kurdistan Region.
