Sandstorm from Southern Iraq Continues to Disrupt Kurdistan Region
Mohammed Kamal, a weather expert in the Kurdistan Region, told Kurdistan 24 that the storm has been intensified by environmental factors, including low rainfall and limited vegetation cover in the affected areas.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A sandstorm originating from southwestern Iraq continues to impact the Kurdistan Region and is expected to persist until late Monday night, according to meteorological officials.
Mohammed Kamal, a weather expert in the Kurdistan Region, told Kurdistan 24 that the storm has been intensified by environmental factors, including low rainfall and limited vegetation cover in the affected areas. These conditions, he warned, could lead to recurring waves of dust in the coming weeks.
“The current storm is part of a broader pattern that could cause further disruptions across the region,” Kamal said.
The sandstorm, which has swept through parts of the Kurdistan Region over the past several days, has already led to power outages and structural damage. In one incident, a section of a school building collapsed due to strong winds and dust accumulation.
As a result of the sandstorm, 94 individuals in Kirkuk with asthma were admitted to hospitals.
Authorities have urged residents, especially those with respiratory conditions, to remain indoors and take the necessary precautions.
