Iraq Welcomes PKK’s Decision to Disarm and Dissolve
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the PKK’s decision as “an important and positive step” that contributes to bolstering security and stability in Iraq and the wider region.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Iraq on Monday welcomed the Kurdistan Workers' Party’s (PKK) announcement to dissolve itself, end armed conflict, and lay down its weapons, calling the move a positive step toward regional peace and stability.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the PKK’s decision as “an important and positive step” that contributes to bolstering security and stability in Iraq and the wider region.
“This announcement represents a real opportunity to advance peace efforts and end the protracted conflicts that have cast a shadow over the peoples of the region for decades,” the statement read. “This development also serves as a natural entry point for reconsidering the pretexts and justifications that have long been used to justify the presence of foreign forces on Iraqi territory.”
The ministry reiterated Iraq’s support for all initiatives aimed at consolidating peace and promoting dialogue, stressing the need to address security challenges through understanding and cooperation to meet the aspirations of the region’s peoples for lasting peace and development.
The PKK, designated a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union, has been engaged in armed conflict for decades. The group’s decision to disband marks a significant development in regional geopolitics and may ease long-standing tensions, particularly in areas of the Kurdistan Region where PKK fighters have maintained a presence.
