ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani arrived in Baghdad on Saturday to participate in the Arab Summit, following an official invitation from Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. The visit underscores the Kurdistan Region’s growing engagement in broader Middle Eastern diplomatic processes.

According to Dilshad Shahab, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Region Presidency, the Region President's participation is part of ongoing efforts to organize and contribute to the Conference of Arab Cooperation, currently being hosted in the Iraqi capital.

The invitation, Shahab emphasized, reflects both the strategic importance of the Kurdistan Region within Iraq’s federal system and President Barzani’s consistent involvement in regional affairs.

“The invitation underscores the Kurdistan Region’s readiness and standing within the framework of the federal state's foreign policy and diplomatic engagements,” Shahab stated.

The Arab Summit officially opened today in Baghdad, gathering several Arab heads of state, senior representatives, and international delegates. The conference is expected to center its discussions on escalating crises in Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen—conflicts that continue to dominate the region’s security and humanitarian landscape.

President Nechirvan Barzani’s presence in Baghdad comes at a moment when Iraq seeks to reposition itself as a unifying platform for dialogue among Arab nations, especially amid intensifying regional tensions and humanitarian emergencies.

His participation also symbolizes internal cohesion between Erbil and Baghdad at a time when federal-regional relations remain under close scrutiny.

As the summit unfolds, Barzani’s engagement is expected to focus not only on reaffirming solidarity with regional allies but also on advancing the Kurdistan Region’s role as a constructive partner in diplomacy and crisis resolution.

The conference marks a critical opportunity for Iraq, and by extension the Kurdistan Region, to demonstrate leadership in a fragmented geopolitical environment.
