ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Iraqi politician Mithal al-Alusi has issued a dramatic appeal to Baghdad’s ruling Coordination Framework, urging its leaders to “atone for their sins” and rebuild ties with the Kurdistan Region. His comments came as Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani leads a high-level delegation on a strategic visit to Washington, D.C.—a diplomatic mission al-Alusi described as crucial for Iraq’s future.

Taking to the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, al-Alusi described the Kurdish delegation’s visit to the United States as “a significant Kurdish strategic delegation at a critical time,” emphasizing the moment’s historical gravity.

Alusi’s message was as much an indictment of Iraq’s post-2003 political system as it was an endorsement of the Kurdistan Region’s role in holding the nation together. “Today’s Iraq is no longer the Iraq of the great Mesopotamia,” he wrote. “Through failed and corrupt regimes, Iraq has lost its strength—its diversity, its cultures, its civilization, and its wealth. Iraq has lost its Jews, Christians, Mandaeans, Baha’is, Yazidis, and Faylis. The country has become a hub of fascist and destructive dictatorship.”

He praised the Kurdistan Region for offering a counter-model within Iraq—one of relative safety, inclusivity, and progress. “Kurdistan represents safety, prosperity, and the Kurdish geography that completes the unity of the Iraqi state amid a sectarian, quota-based, backward and corrupt system—a system like a rabid dog that devours its own people,” al-Alusi stated.

In one of his strongest passages, al-Alusi denounced the broader political system for violently displacing and exiling millions of Iraqis. “It has inflicted suffering on all—Shi’a, Sunni Arabs, Kurds, Turkmen, and every citizen who refuses to pledge loyalty or does not belong to them.”

According to previous reports by Kurdistan24, Prime Minister Barzani’s visit to the United States includes meetings with senior American officials and members of Congress to discuss strengthening bilateral relations, deepening security cooperation, and supporting economic development in the Kurdistan Region. The trip has been widely viewed as an affirmation of the Kurdistan Region’s role as a stable and reliable partner to the West amid deepening political dysfunction in Baghdad.

Alusi’s post concluded with a stark message to Baghdad’s rulers: “O members of the Coordination Framework, atone for your sins and act quickly to win over Kurdistan—if you have any wisdom.”

His comments reflect growing concern among Iraqi intellectuals and former officials that sectarian entrenchment and unchecked corruption have undermined national cohesion. At a time when Iraq faces mounting economic pressures, security challenges, and geopolitical uncertainty, voices like al-Alusi’s are seeking to reframe Kurdistan as a potential anchor of unity and reform.

As the Kurdistan Region’s delegation engages in high-level talks in Washington, al-Alusi’s warning serves as both a critique of Iraq’s trajectory and a call for national recalibration before deeper fragmentation takes root.
