ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday confirmed the death of senior Hamas official Mohammed Sinwar, stating that the younger brother of the late Yahya Sinwar was killed in a recent Israeli airstrike amid the ongoing war in Gaza.

Speaking before the Knesset, Netanyahu listed Mohammed Sinwar among top Hamas leaders allegedly eliminated by Israel’s military campaign. “We have killed tens of thousands of terrorists. We killed [Mohammed] Deif, [Ismail] Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar and Mohammed Sinwar,” the Israeli premier declared during his parliamentary address, without offering further details.

Mohammed Sinwar, a high-ranking figure within the Hamas leadership, reportedly rose to prominence after his brother Yahya—former head of Hamas in Gaza—was killed earlier in the war. His ascent marked a continued consolidation of power by the Sinwar family within the group’s military and political hierarchy.

Airstrike on European Hospital in Khan Younis

Israeli media reports linked Mohammed Sinwar’s death to a May 13 airstrike that targeted a Hamas command center allegedly located beneath the European Hospital in Khan Younis, the Sinwars' hometown in southern Gaza. While the Israeli military confirmed the operation, it declined to comment on the specific targeting or confirmation of Sinwar’s death at the time.

Mohammed Sinwar had long been considered a high-value target by Israeli security agencies. His leadership role within Hamas had reportedly expanded in recent months, particularly following the death of his brother.

Strategic and Symbolic Implications

Observer note that the reported elimination of Sinwar marks a strategic milestone for Israel’s campaign to dismantle Hamas’s military leadership in Gaza. It underscores Tel Aviv’s ongoing policy of targeting the group’s command structure in an effort to weaken its operational capabilities.
