The project aims to both increase the percentage of green areas in Erbil and reinvigorate the visual appeal of key city streets that have seen growing urban congestion and environmental degradation in recent years.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — In an effort to enhance Erbil’s greenery and restore the aesthetic charm of its urban streets, over 4,000 flowers have been planted in the city center, according to the municipality. The campaign, led by landscaping teams from the Directorate of Parks and affiliated with the Erbil Municipality, is part of a broader, ongoing initiative to boost environmental sustainability and improve public spaces across the capital.

The project aims to both increase the percentage of green areas in Erbil and reinvigorate the visual appeal of key city streets that have seen growing urban congestion and environmental degradation in recent years. The planted flowers, arranged in vibrant seasonal displays, are being carefully placed in strategic locations throughout the city’s core, from main intersections to public squares and roadside medians.

According to the municipality, the beautification drive is only the beginning of a longer-term strategy to transform Erbil’s landscape through sustainable urban planning and eco-conscious practices. “This initiative is part of our continuous efforts to green the city, improve air quality, and create a more inviting atmosphere for residents and visitors,” said an official from the Parks Directorate.

Erbil, the thriving capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, stands as a remarkable fusion of ancient heritage and modern urban progress. As one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Erbil is not only steeped in history but also serves as a model of forward-thinking development in the Middle East. Over the past two decades, the city has witnessed dynamic growth, becoming a regional hub for commerce, culture, and tourism.

Far from being overwhelmed by rapid urbanization, Erbil has embraced a bold vision of sustainability and livability. The city’s leadership, through the Erbil Municipality, has prioritized green infrastructure as a cornerstone of urban resilience. In an era of rising global temperatures and environmental challenges, the Municipality’s strategic investment in green spaces demonstrates a deep commitment to public health, ecological balance, and long-term prosperity.

Beautification campaigns—like the current flower-planting initiative—are part of a broader environmental transformation, reinforcing Erbil’s identity as a clean, vibrant, and welcoming city. These efforts not only improve air quality and biodiversity but also foster a sense of pride among residents and enhance the city’s appeal to visitors from around the world.

In recent years, the Erbil Municipality has launched a range of impactful initiatives, from large-scale tree planting to the renovation of public parks and the creation of eco-friendly recreational areas. These projects reflect the city’s commitment to shaping an environment that nurtures both its citizens and its centuries-old legacy.

The ongoing campaign to plant over 4,000 flowers across the city center marks another milestone in this journey. With future phases planned for residential and suburban zones, the Municipality continues to lead by example—showing that a green city is not just a dream, but an achievable, living reality in the heart of Kurdistan.
