ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – A previously unknown Palestinian armed faction identifying itself as the “Martyr Mohammed Deif Brigades” has claimed responsibility for a cross-border rocket attack from Syrian territory into Israeli-held Golan Heights late Tuesday, marking the group’s first-ever public operation.
In an official statement, the group took credit for the attack and declared its intent to sustain military operations “to avenge the blood of the martyrs,” vowing that their campaign will persist until all occupied territories are liberated.
“We were born under bombardment and raised to the sound of bullets. We do not accept a life of humiliation,” the group proclaimed, pledging to continue its fight even at the cost of their lives. “We will remain the sword confronting the occupation, and we will not fall silent. Every inch of occupied land will be freed.”
The emergence of the Martyr Mohammed Deif Brigades in Syria adds a new layer to the ongoing cross-border escalation between Israeli forces and factions operating on Syrian soil.
Israeli Strikes Deepen in Southern Syria
According to Sky News Arabia, Israel has since escalated its military response. The Israeli army carried out additional missile strikes targeting the 175th Regiment near the city of Izraa and the surroundings of Tal al-Mal in northern Daraa Province. Airstrikes also hit the towns of Sa’sa’ and Kanaker in the Damascus countryside.
Preliminary reports indicate that the 121st Brigade in Qatana, near Damascus, was also targeted, although the extent of the damage or casualties remains unclear. Israeli military sources claimed the strikes were aimed at destroying Syrian regime weapons caches in southern Syria.
Reconnaissance drones and warplanes reportedly continued flying over the area on Wednesday, suggesting further operations might be imminent.
Damascus Condemns Attacks, Denies Involvement
In response to the Israeli strikes, the Syrian Foreign Ministry issued a statement condemning what it called “aggression against villages and towns in Daraa province,” citing significant civilian casualties and property damage.
The ministry said it had not verified reports about rockets fired into Israeli territory and warned that “some actors may be attempting to destabilize the region for their own benefit.”
“Syria has not and will not pose a threat to any party in the region,” the statement stressed, urging the international community to intervene to prevent further escalations and support regional stability.
Escalation Along Syrian-Israeli Front
The rocket fire from southern Syria marked the first such incident since May 5, 2024, and the first since the fall of the Assad regime in December. According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), the two rockets landed in open areas in the Golan Heights and caused no injuries. Sirens sounded in the towns of Hispin and Ramat Magshimim shortly before the impacts.
Within minutes of the launch, the IDF initiated retaliatory strikes on southern Syria. IDF reported that the military began targeting Syrian positions in response to the rocket attack.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant issued a stern warning, holding Syria’s leadership accountable.
“We hold the Syrian president directly responsible for every threat and firing at the State of Israel, and the full response will come as soon as possible. We will not allow a return to the reality of October 7th,” said Gallant on Wednesday.
