ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Pshtiwan Sadiq, Minister of Endowment and Religious Affairs in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), voiced strong criticism on Friday over the Iraqi government's decision to halt public employee salaries in the Kurdistan Region during the Eid al-Adha holiday.

Speaking at a press conference, Minister Sadiq described the move as both "unconstitutional and illegal," and expressed deep concern over its timing and implications.

“We are very worried that the federal government has suspended the salaries of Kurdistan Region public employees during Eid al-Adha in an unconstitutional and illegal decision,” Sadiq said.

He emphasized that the KRG has fully fulfilled its obligations under the Iraqi constitution and relevant laws, asserting that the federal government’s actions constitute a clear breach of both legal and moral standards.

“In both a religious and a humanitarian sense, this is a significant violation,” he noted. “We have never encountered such actions in the history of any other country—not even an enemy would act this way.”

Minister Sadiq reaffirmed the KRG’s commitment to resolving the issue through diplomatic channels, stating that the government is actively engaging with Baghdad and the international community.

“As stated by the KRG Council of Ministers, we will support and make serious efforts with the international community, and we are actively working with Baghdad to resolve this issue, as it represents a grave injustice against Kurdish citizens,” he said.

The suspension of salaries has drawn widespread concern across the Kurdistan Region, especially as it coincides with one of the most important religious holidays in the Islamic calendar.
