ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced Saturday that it had likely located the body of Mohammed Sinwar, a former senior Hamas military commander in Gaza, during an underground operation beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis. The discovery is part of a broader Israeli military effort to dismantle Hamas's underground infrastructure in southern Gaza.

According to a report by Army Radio, the body believed to be Sinwar’s was found in a subterranean complex beneath the European Hospital. The IDF operation also uncovered approximately ten other bodies, identified as belonging to Hamas operatives. The tunnel was reportedly used as an underground command and control center by the group.

Sinwar, a former commander of Hamas’s military wing, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on May 13 during a targeted operation in Khan Yunis. The IDF confirmed that the strike was conducted jointly with the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) and aimed at high-ranking Hamas figures entrenched in a fortified underground bunker.

Command Center Targeted in May Airstrike

According to reporting from The Jerusalem Post, the Israeli military utilized a bunker-buster bomb in the initial strike on the site believed to be harboring Sinwar. A second airstrike followed soon after, reportedly designed to prevent the extraction of Hamas casualties from the area. These actions were conducted under strict operational protocols to minimize civilian harm, the IDF emphasized.

The targeted Hamas command facility was situated beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis, yet, according to The Jerusalem Post, hospital operations were not disrupted during the strike. Israeli intelligence reportedly played a central role in identifying the location and structure of the underground site prior to the operation.

Strategic Blow to Hamas

The reported elimination of Sinwar marks a significant blow to Hamas’s military leadership, as he played a pivotal role in orchestrating the group’s military operations in the southern Gaza Strip. His death, coupled with the destruction of an active command center, underscores Israel’s intensified campaign against Hamas’s subterranean networks and command hubs.

This latest development follows months of military activity targeting Hamas infrastructure across Gaza, with the IDF continuing to assert that its operations are narrowly focused on dismantling militant capabilities while avoiding harm to civilians and medical facilities.
