ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Mohamed al-Hassan, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), emphasized on Tuesday the need for increased cooperation between Baghdad and Erbil to resolve their issues based on the constitution.

The UNAMI Head's remarks came at a UN Security Council meeting to discuss the situation in Iraq.

"Today's Iraq is not the same as it was 20 years ago. Security and stability have been established in the country despite the challenges and obstacles," al-Hassan stated.

Concerning Iraqi parliamentary elections, he added that "The Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission has made significant progress with the technical assistance of UNAMI and has committed to holding transparent elections with the participation of all Iraqis.”

Al-Hassan also added that "To date, 100,000 Yezidis have been unable to return to their homes due to the deteriorating situation in their areas and remain in camps in Iraq.”

He urged the Iraqi government to act decisively and promptly to adopt a national plan aimed at finding a lasting solution to the Yezidi issue and restoring hope for their future.

"The Yezidis in Iraq have suffered immensely. I urge Iraq and all neighboring countries to take all necessary measures to protect the Yezidis and assist them in returning to their homes," he concluded.
