Kurdistan Region Home to Over 6,500 Archaeological Sites and 22 Historic Castles

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Region is home to over 6,000 historical sites and 22 castles, most of which are located in Erbil province.

Jamal Jamil, director of restoration at the Kurdistan Region Archaeological Directorate, told Kurdistan24 on Wednesday, "We have a large number of castles and archaeological sites in the Kurdistan Region. Currently, there are 22 castles in various parts of the region that remain protected, with some being used for administrative purposes."

"New castles are constantly being discovered and surveyed. Some are being restored, while others still require restoration," he added.

Jamil also noted that most of these castles were built during the reign of Muhammad Pasha of Rawanduz, Mir of the Soran Emirate, and were primarily used for military purposes.

Some of the castles registered with the Kurdistan Region Archaeological Directorate include:

In Erbil: Dween, Khanzad, Dere.

In Sulaimani: Sartka, Zalm, Srochik.

In Duhok: Akre, Amedi, Hiror, and Arze.

In total, more than 6,500 archaeological sites have been registered in the Kurdistan Region.
