ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – In response to escalating regional tensions following Israeli airstrikes on Iranian targets, the Iraqi government on Friday closed the Green Zone in central Baghdad, a fortified area housing diplomatic missions, including the U.S. Embassy.

The security measure came as part of precautionary efforts to ensure public safety amid concerns that the conflict between Israel and Iran could spill over into neighboring countries.

Prominent Iraqi Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr also issued a statement on Friday, addressing the Israeli attacks which struck several locations in Tehran, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) headquarters, reportedly killing several high-ranking Iranian officials.

Al-Sadr expressed solidarity with the Iranian people, voicing hope that they would be spared from what he described as the threats of “international terrorism.” He stressed the importance of safeguarding Iraq’s holy sites and maintaining national stability, warning that Iraq and its people “do not need another war.”

While tensions remain high across the region, Iraqi officials have reiterated their commitment to protecting diplomatic missions and preventing internal unrest.
