ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The Director of Erbil International Airport announced Saturday evening that Iraq’s airspace will remain closed to civilian flights for another 24 hours due to ongoing security concerns stemming from the escalating military conflict between Israel and Iran.

Ahmed Hoshyar, Director of Erbil International Airport, told Kurdistan24 that the closure of Iraqi airspace to civilian aviation has been extended for an additional 24 hours.

Earlier the same day, the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority issued a statement declaring that the suspension of civilian air traffic would continue until 7:00 p.m. local time on Saturday.

The authority previously stated that the decision applies to all inbound and outbound flights and that the suspension is in place for security and precautionary reasons.

On Friday, Iraq’s Ministry of Transportation informed Kurdistan24 that a decision was made to suspend all civilian flights in Iraq until 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. The ministry noted that a reassessment of the situation would be conducted afterward to determine whether the suspension would be lifted or further extended.

The suspension of Iraq’s airspace comes as tensions and military operations escalate between Israel and Iran. The conflict has raised regional security concerns, prompting multiple countries in the region, including Iraq, to halt civilian air travel as a precautionary measure.
