ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The Iraqi government has condemned Israel for violating Iraqi airspace and announced practical measures to address the breach, according to a statement published Saturday by the state-owned Iraqi News Agency (INA).

Sabah Al-Numan, spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, said Iraq “firmly and categorically rejects” the violation of its airspace and the use of its territory for military attacks by the “Zionist entity” against the Islamic Republic of Iran or any neighboring country.

“This act constitutes a fundamental and constitutional obligation for Iraq to uphold the principles of good neighborliness and to prevent its land, water, and skies from being used as a launchpad for aggression against neighboring states with which Iraq maintains strong relations on various levels,” he said.

Al-Numan stressed that the Iraqi government is closely coordinating with international parties to address what it described as illegal acts, calling them a “flagrant violation” of Iraq’s sovereignty and international law, with serious implications for regional peace and stability.

He further urged the United States to fulfill its responsibilities under bilateral agreements and international norms to prevent Israeli aircraft from repeating such breaches and conducting attacks from Iraqi airspace.

“Iraq has exercised the highest degree of restraint in hopes of paving the way for diplomatic and political solutions to defuse the crisis peacefully,” Al-Numan added. “However, Iraq retains the right, under international law and UN charters, to utilize all its capabilities to respond to any violation of national sovereignty, regardless of the source.”

The statement concluded that, based on the directive of the Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Iraq has initiated practical steps through its Foreign Ministry and permanent mission to the United Nations in response to Israel’s breach of its sovereignty by violating its airspace.

This development comes amid an escalating military conflict between Israel and Iran. On Friday, Israel launched a series of strikes targeting Iranian military and nuclear facilities, prompting retaliatory attacks from Tehran. The regional conflict has triggered concerns among neighboring countries, including Iraq.
