Erbil (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Interior announced on Saturday that it has launched a coordinated effort to assist citizens stranded at airports in neighboring countries, providing them with a secure and organized pathway to return home.

In an official statement released on Saturday, the Ministry confirmed the establishment of a joint coordination room between the Ministry of Interior and the Department of Foreign Relations. The purpose of this initiative is to streamline the return procedures for Kurdish citizens who have been unable to travel back due to various restrictions or logistical issues.

As part of the operation, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), through collaboration with Turkish authorities, has secured a transit arrangement for citizens carrying Iraqi passports. These individuals can now return to the Kurdistan Region without needing a prior visa. Upon arrival at Istanbul International Airport or Sabiha Gökçen Airport, travelers will be granted a five-day Turkish transit visa, enabling them to continue their journey by land or domestic flight to an airport near the Kurdistan Region.

From there, citizens can re-enter Kurdistan via the Ibrahim Khalil International Border Crossing, with full support from government teams deployed on-site.

The Ministry has also provided dedicated hotlines for citizens in need of assistance:

In addition, the statement highlighted procedures for citizens currently stuck in European airports. Those holding Iraqi passports with valid Schengen visas may apply for an electronic Turkish visa (e-visa) online or may also be allowed entry into Turkey without a visa, depending on individual circumstances.

The KRG emphasized that its teams at both the Ibrahim Khalil and Haji Omaran international border crossings are on standby to provide humanitarian and logistical support. These teams, comprised of officials from both the Ministry of Interior and the Department of Foreign Relations, are tasked with ensuring that returning citizens receive timely assistance.

The move comes amid growing concerns over the welfare of Kurdish travelers affected by recent regional disruptions and transportation delays. Authorities have reassured the public that all available resources are being mobilized to ensure their safe return.

For ongoing updates, citizens are encouraged to follow official channels or contact the Ministry of Interior directly.
