ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, along with the Consulate General in Erbil, issued a countrywide security message on Saturday, June 21, 2025, reiterating a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory for Iraq and providing detailed guidance for American citizens currently in the country or considering travel.

The alert emphasized that “U.S. citizens should not travel to Iraq for any reason” due to the ongoing security situation. The advisory includes precautionary measures and updated information for Americans who remain in Iraq or seek to cross its borders.

Essential Safety Measures for Those in Iraq

The embassy urged American nationals in Iraq to take the following steps:

  • Avoid large gatherings and crowds
  • Keep mobile phones charged and maintain communication with family and friends
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for real-time alerts and easier emergency contact
  • Prepare an emergency plan and review the State Department’s Traveler’s Checklist
  • Monitor local media for updates and be ready to alter travel plans accordingly

Land Borders with Kuwait and Türkiye Remain Open

According to the advisory, Iraq’s land borders with Türkiye and Kuwait remain operational but are subject to delays. The Habur (Ibrahim Khalil) and Uzumlu (Sar Zeri) border crossings into Türkiye are functioning, with the latter open daily from 08:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Travelers should anticipate extended wait times.

U.S. citizens intending to cross into Türkiye are instructed to send their travel details—including name, date of birth, passport information, intended crossing, and any medical or safety concerns—along with a photo of their passport biodata page to the U.S. Embassy in Ankara at [email protected].

For those heading to Kuwait, similar procedures apply. Travelers must send their information to the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait at [email protected] to facilitate quicker assistance in emergencies.

Consular Services for U.S. Citizens Remain Operational

Although routine visa services remain suspended, both the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and the Consulate General in Erbil continue to provide consular support for American citizens. The mission stated it will continue to release updated guidance as needed.

The advisory also encouraged citizens to follow the State Department via its official platforms and WhatsApp alert services for ongoing updates.

The embassy’s latest communication reflects heightened security awareness amid regional instability and aims to ensure American citizens remain informed and prepared under rapidly shifting conditions.
