ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres voiced deep concern on Sunday following the United States' military strike on Iranian nuclear sites, calling the action a “dangerous escalation” and a direct threat to global peace and security.

“I am gravely alarmed by the use of force by the United States against Iran today,” Guterres said in a statement posted on his official platform. “This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security.”

A Warning Against Spiraling Chaos

Guterres warned that the situation risks spiraling out of control with “catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world.” He called on all UN Member States to act responsibly and to uphold their legal obligations under the United Nations Charter and international law.

“At this perilous hour, it is critical to avoid a spiral of chaos,” the Secretary-General urged.

No Military Solution, Only Diplomacy

Echoing long-standing UN principles, Guterres underscored that there can be “no military solution” to the crisis, emphasizing instead that “the only path forward is diplomacy. The only hope is peace.”

The remarks came just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that American B-2 bombers had carried out strikes on Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan—three key Iranian nuclear facilities—in what the administration described as a decisive and successful military operation.

As regional powers and global institutions weigh the implications of the U.S. action, the Secretary-General’s urgent plea stands as a stark reminder of the fragile threshold between armed conflict and the international community’s obligation to preserve peace.
