Red Cross Chief Warns U.S.-Iran Escalation Risks ‘War With Irreversible Consequences’

ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric warned that U.S. strikes on Iran could trigger a regional war with global consequences. She urged adherence to international law and called for restraint, as fears of broader conflict grow following escalating U.S.-Iran tensions.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mirjana Spoljaric, issued a stark warning on Sunday regarding the potential fallout from the recent U.S. military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, cautioning that the escalation could trigger a regional conflict with irreversible global consequences.

"The intensification and spread of major military operations in the Middle East risk engulfing the region — and the world — in a war with irreversible consequences," Spoljaric said in an official statement from Geneva, following Washington’s bombardment of Iran’s key nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan.

Her remarks come amid growing international alarm after U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed what he called a “spectacular military success,” involving the use of B-2 stealth bombers to strike deeply fortified Iranian facilities. The operation, coordinated with Israel, was framed by the U.S. administration as a necessary action to neutralize Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Iran has since vowed retaliation and warned that U.S. military bases across the region could become targets, further raising fears of a broader regional conflagration.

The ICRC, a neutral humanitarian organization mandated to protect victims of armed conflict, stressed the need to uphold international humanitarian law and avoid actions that could further endanger civilian populations already affected by instability and conflict.

Spoljaric’s comments are among the most forceful yet from an international humanitarian body and add to the mounting chorus of global calls for restraint, diplomacy, and immediate de-escalation.
