ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Sunday urged Iran to return to the negotiating table without delay following overnight U.S. airstrikes on key Iranian nuclear sites, warning of the dangers of further escalation and underscoring Berlin’s support for a diplomatic resolution.
“Iran must immediately enter into negotiations with the U.S. and Israel and find a diplomatic solution to the conflict,” Merz said, according to a statement from his spokesperson Stefan Kornelius.
The German government has assessed that “large parts of Iran's nuclear programme have been damaged by the airstrikes,” Kornelius added, referring to the coordinated bombardment of Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan facilities by B-2 stealth bombers deployed by the United States.
The appeal comes as tensions soar across the Middle East in the wake of what U.S. President Donald Trump described as a “historic military success,” and amid fears that Iranian retaliation could trigger a broader regional war.
Germany has long been a key advocate of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers, which has come under increasing strain since the Trump administration’s unilateral withdrawal in 2018.
Berlin’s call for renewed diplomacy aligns with broader European appeals for de-escalation and dialogue to prevent the collapse of regional stability and avoid catastrophic consequences for global security.
