Erbil (Kurdistan24) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has reaffirmed that his government is closely monitoring the PKK’s declared disarmament and expressed confidence that the process will gain momentum once the group implements the decision. His remarks come ahead of scheduled talks with the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) next week.
Erdoğan: PKK's Disarmament Marks a New Era
Speaking to reporters aboard his return flight from the 17th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Summit in Azerbaijan, President Erdoğan said, “The steps toward a terror-free Türkiye are being taken in a controlled and sequential manner. Our stance has been clear from the beginning: the disarmament must be unconditional, and the organization must dissolve structurally. Progress has been made accordingly.”
He emphasized that Turkey’s peace process is being closely followed by relevant state institutions and warned against any provocations: “We will not let this process run adrift. We are working with utmost diligence and advancing confidently.”
Talks with DEM Party Set for Next Week
Erdoğan confirmed an upcoming meeting with DEM Party leaders to discuss past and future steps related to the peace process. “Our meeting will take place next week. My Chief of Staff Hasan Doğan will finalize the appointment. Pervin Buldan and Mithat Sancar will represent the DEM Party. I will be joined by our Party Vice Chairman Efkan Ala and National Intelligence Organization (MIT) Chief İbrahim Kalın,” Erdoğan revealed.
He reiterated that PKK’s disarmament would usher in a new phase for Turkey in terms of security, democracy, and development.
Syria Policy: Reconstruction, Stability, and Regional Cooperation
Turning to Syria, Erdoğan declared unwavering support for a prosperous and peaceful future for the neighboring country. “Just as we stood with the Syrian people during the early days of the conflict, we are now committed to supporting them in rebuilding their nation,” he stated.
He emphasized that Turkey is actively developing bilateral relations with Syria, adding, “A stable, peaceful, and strong Syria will benefit its neighbors and enhance regional security. Syria’s territorial integrity is a fundamental principle for us.”
Recalling Turkey’s military operations—Euphrates Shield, Olive Branch, and Peace Spring—Erdoğan said these were conducted to ensure Turkey’s border security and help stabilize northern Syria. He underscored that Syria’s resources and future belong solely to the Syrian people.
Rejection of Any Legitimization of Armed Groups in Syria
President Erdoğan made it clear that Turkey will not accept any plan that legitimizes terrorist groups in Syria. “We support the complete neutralization of terrorism and the consolidation of Syrian Army control over all territories. We will continue contributing toward this goal,” he noted.
He warned that those who attempt to destabilize the region will confront Turkey and said Ankara would leverage military, diplomatic, and economic tools to reinforce its position both in the field and at the negotiation table.
Aliyev’s Gas Offer to Syria Welcomed
Erdoğan also welcomed Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s pledge to supply natural gas to Syria. “This is a significant development. Syria’s biggest challenge right now is energy. With natural gas, they can overcome that. I was truly pleased with this offer, and I will immediately notify our Energy Minister to inform President Ahmad Shar'a,” he said.
Erdoğan concluded by noting that steps to lift international sanctions on Syria have already been taken and will be strengthened. “With Azerbaijan’s support, we intend to integrate our initiatives and move forward together,” he said.
