ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Iraqi Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, on Tuesday ordered an immediate and thorough investigation into drone attacks targeting two oil fields in the Kurdistan Region, according to a statement by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
The attacks, which occurred earlier this week, posed a serious threat to Iraq’s vital infrastructure and national interests.
“Two oil fields in the Kurdistan Region were attacked by drones, posing a direct threat to the interests of the Iraqi people and undermining the State’s efforts to establish stability and promote development,” said Sabah al-Numan, the official spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief.
He noted that the timing and nature of the attacks indicated a “malicious intent aimed at creating confusion and harming Iraq and its vital institutions.”
In response, Prime Minister al-Sudani instructed relevant authorities to carry out a swift and comprehensive investigation to identify and hold those responsible accountable.
“The government will take all necessary measures to protect Iraq’s vital infrastructure and enhance the defense system to prevent future incidents,” the statement affirmed, stressing that Baghdad would not tolerate any threat against the country’s sovereignty or the welfare of its citizens.
On Tuesday, a drone strike targeted the Sarsang oil field in Duhok. No casualties were reported in the attack. Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad in a statement strongly condemned the drone strike, calling it “unacceptable” and urging the Iraqi government to hold those responsible accountable.
