ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Federal Supreme Court of Iraq on Sunday dismissed a lawsuit challenging the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) gas development contracts with international firms HKN Energy and WesternZagros.

The lawsuit, filed by Bassem Naghish Jalif Zghair al-Ghribawi, a member of the Iraqi Parliament’s Oil, Gas, and Natural Resources Committee, aimed to invalidate contracts signed on May 19 for the Miran and Topkhana-Gardemeyer gas fields. The plaintiff also requested the court to require the KRG to seek federal approval before entering into future oil and gas agreements.

However, the Federal Supreme Court rejected the complaint, ruling it unconstitutional and reaffirming the KRG’s authority to sign contracts for energy development in the Region.

The decision has been welcomed as a boost for energy investment and legal clarity in the Kurdistan Region, where international oil and gas companies have continued to play a vital role in the development of local resources and the economy.
