KRG Reports 32 Drowning Cases Across Kurdistan Region This Year
Karash stated that citizens and tourists have been warned in Kurdish, Arabic, and English that swimming in particular areas is prohibited and dangerous; however, compliance has been lacking.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Sarkawt Karash, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Civil Defense Directorate, told Kurdistan24 on Sunday that this year, 32 drowning cases have been recorded in the Kurdistan Region, with the majority occurring in Erbil province, which accounted for 11 cases.
Karash stated that citizens and tourists have been warned in Kurdish, Arabic, and English that swimming in particular areas is prohibited and dangerous; however, compliance has been lacking.
According to Kurdistan24, the following drowning cases have been recorded:
Erbil: 11 drowning cases recorded
Sulaimani: No drowning cases recorded
Duhok: Five drowning cases recorded
Halabja: No drowning cases recorded
Soran Independent Administration: Five drowning cases recorded. One body has not yet been found
Raparin Independent Administration: One drowning case recorded and 28 rescues reported
Zakho Independent Administration: Six drowning cases recorded
Garmiyan Independent Administration: Two drowning cases were recorded
Akre district and Bardarash sub-district: Two drowning cases were recorded
Every summer, the General Directorate of Civil Defense of the Kurdistan Region erects signs and warnings with detailed information at water tourist attractions and near rivers, lakes, and streams to raise awareness among tourists and citizens about the dangers of swimming in these locations.
