ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Israel reacted angrily on Wednesday to Canada’s announcement of its intent to recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session in September, condemning the decision as an endorsement of Hamas's actions and a blow to ongoing ceasefire negotiations.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said the move was necessary to preserve hopes of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a long-standing Canadian goal that was "being eroded before our eyes."

"Canada intends to recognize the State of Palestine at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025," the prime minister said.

From his side, Donald Trump president of the United State, published a statement on his Truth Social Media platform warning that Canada's support for Palestinian statehood makes a trade deal with Ottawa "very hard", US President Donald Trump said early Thursday.

"Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh' Canada!!!" Trump Said.

On the Israeli Side, in a strongly worded statement, the Israeli embassy in Ottawa accused Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney of participating in a "distorted international pressure campaign." The statement warned that such recognition would only serve to “strengthen Hamas’s position at the negotiating table at a critical moment.”

“Recognizing a Palestinian state in the absence of a responsible government, effective institutions, or a prudent leadership legitimizes and rewards Hamas’s barbaric brutality on October 7, 2023,” the embassy said, referring to the attack that triggered Israel's ongoing military campaign in Gaza.

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs echoed this stance in a separate statement issued Thursday morning, declaring: “A shift in the Canadian government’s position at this time constitutes a reward for Hamas and undermines efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and a framework for the release of hostages.”

The Canadian government has yet to formally respond to the criticism. However, Prime Minister Carney’s anticipated announcement is expected to further polarize international diplomatic efforts surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
