Power Outages Paralyze Dhi Qar Businesses Amid Soaring Temperatures

Mohammed Khayat, a tailor, told Kurdistan24, “We don't have any electricity, and the generator owner only turns it on when he feels like it. Look at this small cooler I use; there’s no electricity to power the air conditioner.”

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Dhi Qar shop owners are expressing frustration over the electricity situation in the province, stating, “There are only two hours of electricity daily.”

Mohammed Khayat, a tailor, told Kurdistan24, “We don't have any electricity, and the generator owner only turns it on when he feels like it. Look at this small cooler I use; there’s no electricity to power the air conditioner.”

Hassan Ali, another tailor, added, “Electricity is available for two hours at a time, which makes it impossible for us to work and meet our customers' deadlines. They are genuinely suffering. The temperatures in the market are extremely high, and this hampers our ability to perform our jobs.”

Meanwhile, Nur Nasri informed Kurdistan24, “While there are two hours of electricity daily, constant interruptions mean that residents of Dhi Qar actually receive only one and a half hours of electricity. This situation stems from administrative and financial corruption within the Ministry of Electricity, as well as the opposition from the ministry and its minister regarding Dhi Qar province. Widespread demonstrations are likely to occur in front of the thermal power station in the province.”

The electricity crisis is the most pressing issue facing the Iraqi people. For many years, as summer temperatures have risen, power outages have become more frequent, leading to widespread frustration among citizens and prompting numerous street protests.
