ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – On the 11th anniversary of the genocide against the Yazidis, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani issued a solemn statement, calling the tragedy a "deep and unhealed wound" and demanding the Iraqi federal government implement the Sinjar Agreement to end the "adverse situation" preventing reconstruction and the return of displaced communities.

In his message commemorating the anniversary of the occupation of Sinjar, the Prime Minister respectfully remembered the martyrs of the genocide, which he described as a profound scar "in the history of the people of Kurdistan and humanity as a whole."

The statement paid special tribute to the Peshmerga of Kurdistan, honoring their "sacrifice and heroism" in liberating Sinjar and its surrounding areas under the leadership of President Masoud Barzani. Prime Minister Barzani also extended his gratitude for the "courageous stance of the people of Kurdistan in general, and Duhok province and the Badinan region in particular, for coming to the aid of and assisting our Yazidi sisters and brothers."

Detailing the ongoing commitment of his government, the Prime Minister affirmed that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) "continues its efforts to liberate and secure the return of all abductees who have not yet been freed, and to find and determine the fate of the missing." He noted that the KRG also persists in providing financial support to survivors and assisting Yazidis who remain in camps, unable to go home "because the situation in Sinjar and its surroundings has not been normalized."

The Prime Minister placed direct responsibility on Baghdad to resolve the protracted crisis. "On this solemn anniversary, we reiterate that the Federal Government must fulfill its duties and responsibilities to compensate our Yazidi sisters and brothers, assist the displaced, and create the conditions for them to return to their homes with dignity," the message stated.

According to the Prime Minister, the path forward is clear: the implementation of the Sinjar Agreement. He stressed that achieving a dignified return for the Yazidis requires "the withdrawal of armed forces and militias from the area, and the restoration of peace and security to the region."

He lamented the lack of progress, stating, "Regrettably, due to the failure to implement the Sinjar Agreement and the adverse situation imposed upon Sinjar since its liberation, it has not been possible to reconstruct the area or provide essential services to the people of the region."

The Prime Minister concluded his message with a powerful tribute: "On the anniversary of the Sinjar genocide, tribute to the pure souls of the martyrs of Sinjar and all the martyrs of Kurdistan."
