ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – A shooting incident unfolded at the Fort Stewart U.S. Army base in Georgia in the United State on Wednesday, injuring five soldiers and prompting a swift security response and lockdown of the facility. The gunman, who opened fire in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area, was apprehended by military police at approximately 11:35 a.m. U.S. time.

According to official statements released through the base’s Facebook page, the base was placed on lockdown at 11:04 a.m. following reports of an “active shooter” situation. Emergency personnel provided immediate on-site medical assistance to the wounded soldiers before they were transferred to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

While the shooter has been detained and there is “no active threat to the community,” officials have stated that the situation remains under investigation. The Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield command has assured that further information will be released as it becomes available.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his sorrow over the incident in a post on X. “As we remain in close contact with law enforcement on the ground, Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart,” Kemp wrote. “We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump has been briefed on the unfolding events. “The White House is monitoring the situation,” she said in a statement, without providing further comment at this stage.

The Fort Stewart base, one of the largest military installations in the United States, remains under heightened security measures. The motive behind the shooting and the identity of the suspect have not yet been disclosed.

Authorities have urged the public to remain calm while investigations continue and reiterated that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of military personnel and surrounding communities.
