ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) strategic water project in Akre is progressing steadily, with the work now at 62% completion, according to project officials. The initiative involves transporting water from the Great Zey River to the center of the Akre district and surrounding villages, aiming to address water scarcity in the area for the next 25 years.

Hawar Mohammed, project manager, told Kurdistan24 that the plan is scheduled to finish by November 2026. “Through this project, we will provide water directly to the residents of the district center and its villages. We are receiving strong support, and we hope to complete the project as soon as possible,” he said.

Zrar Ahmed, head of Akre Water Office, emphasized the project’s critical importance for the area. Upon completion, it will resolve the water shortage issue for the Akre district center, the Bajil sub-district with its 19 villages, and 21 other neighboring villages. The project will supply water consistently to these areas, improving living standards and agricultural productivity.

Funded by the KRG with an allocation of 109 billion Iraqi dinars, the project, after completion, will pump approximately 72,000 cubic meters of water daily from the Great Zey River to Akre’s center. Officials confirmed the aim is to complete the work by next year and maintain water provision for 25 years, ensuring sustainable access to clean water for thousands of residents.

This strategic water project reflects the KRG’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure development and addressing essential public needs in remote and rural areas of the Kurdistan Region.
