ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Turkish Parliament’s Commission for the Peace Process convened for the third time on Tuesday, with Speaker of the Parliament Numan Kurtulmuş affirming that the body’s primary duty is to monitor and guide the process toward lasting reconciliation, while strengthening fraternal and national bonds across the country.

Kurtulmuş, who also chairs the National Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy Commission, stated that the commission’s essential role is to supervise and manage the post-conflict process. He noted that this entails revising certain laws, identifying gaps in the framework, and engaging in discussions on key democratic issues, which he described as central to the commission’s mission.

“In our two previous meetings, all decisions were adopted unanimously, and we wish to maintain this consensus,” Kurtulmuş said, stressing that the commission operates with full responsibility on behalf of the nation.

The Speaker emphasized that the commission is working to eliminate the use of weapons within society, while promoting national unity, fraternity, freedoms, democracy, and the rule of law.

The Peace Process Commission, officially named the Parliamentary Commission on Democracy, Fraternity, and National Unity, last met on Aug. 8, 2025, for its second session. That meeting was attended by key officials, including Ibrahim Kalın, head of Türkiye’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT); Ali Yerlikaya, Minister of the Interior; and Yaşar Güler, Minister of Defense.

The commission consists of 48 members, including 21 from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), 10 from the Republican People’s Party (CHP), 4 each from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (DEM) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), and 3 each from the Good Party (İYİ) and the New Path Party (Yeni Yol). Smaller parties without parliamentary factions each hold one seat.

According to Kurtulmuş, this diverse representation is essential to ensuring that the peace process reflects the perspectives of all political actors and contributes to building a democratic, inclusive, and stable future for Türkiye.
