Massive Explosion Rocks Western Idlib Countryside, Cause Remains Unknown
A powerful blast devastated western Idlib countryside killing 4, with conflicting reports on its origin. SOHR suggests an ammunition depot detonation, while hospitals scramble for blood donations amid rising casualties.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Powerful explosions shook Syria’s Idlib province on Thursday, triggering panic among residents and raising questions about their cause, which remains unclear amid conflicting initial reports.
According to local media outlets, the blasts occurred in the western countryside of Idlib, with no official confirmation yet on the source of the incident. The region had recently been targeted by Israeli strikes on weapons depots and facilities belonging to Syrian security forces.
Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) also reported that Four people were killed and five others were injured in the explosion that occurred near Idlib city..
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that the explosions were caused by the detonation of an ammunition warehouse and a facility used by foreign, non-Syrian fighters in farmlands west of Idlib. The incident coincided with the presence of a drone flying over the area, and plumes of thick smoke were seen rising from the site.
The sudden blasts sent waves of fear among residents and passersby, prompting many to flee from the immediate vicinity. While initial information suggested possible casualties, there has been no official confirmation so far.
SOHR noted that the site had witnessed a similar incident on July 24, when powerful explosions struck the Maarrat Misrin area in northern Idlib’s countryside, resulting from detonations inside ammunition depots.
Earlier this year, the same monitoring group reported a rising death toll from blasts at a warehouse belonging to the Turkistan Islamic Party near Fouaa and Sireen towns. That incident claimed 12 lives, including a woman, a child, and two unidentified individuals, while more than 107 civilians were injured, many critically. Casualties among Turkistan nationals were also reported, though their exact number remains undisclosed due to deliberate concealment.
In the wake of the recent explosions, hospitals across Idlib issued urgent calls for blood donations, as civil defense and rescue teams continued looking for survivors beneath the rubble.
Emergency services and security forces have deployed heavily to the area, while the blast’s proximity to camps housing displaced Syrians from various regions has intensified the sense of fear and instability among civilians.
