Wendy Green Assumes Post as New U.S. Consul General in Erbil

The U.S. has named Gwendolyn "Wendy" Green as its top diplomat in Erbil, bringing 25 years of experience across Africa, Europe and the Middle East. The seasoned diplomat previously managed America's largest African embassy in Ethiopia and served in conflict zones like Afghanistan.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The U.S. Consulate General in Erbil has officially announced Gwendolyn “Wendy” Green as the new U.S. Consul General in the capital of the Kurdistan Region. A seasoned diplomat and career member of the Senior Foreign Service, Green took up her post in August 2025, bringing with her nearly a quarter-century of diplomatic service across diverse global assignments.

Prior to her arrival in Erbil, Green served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia (2023–2025), where she oversaw more than 1,500 staff, managed an operational budget exceeding $60 million, and coordinated $1.6 billion in humanitarian and development projects.

Green’s distinguished career includes serving as long-term Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Malta (2020–2023), where she advanced key U.S. commercial and security interests in the strategic Central Mediterranean. From 2014 to 2017, she was Chief of Consular Services at the U.S. Consulate General in Dubai, which also supervises U.S. visa operations for Iran.

Between 2009 and 2011, Green worked alongside U.S. military leadership as Chief of Interagency Operations and Plans for Eastern Afghanistan. Her earlier overseas assignments include postings in Paramaribo (Suriname), Amsterdam (Netherlands), and Pretoria (South Africa).

In Washington, D.C., she has served as Career Development Officer; Chief of Political-Military Affairs for Afghanistan; member of the Civilian Response Corps in the Secretary’s Office of the Coordinator for Reconstruction and Stabilization; and Special Assistant in the Bureau of Consular Affairs.

Green is a multiple Senior Performance Pay recipient, a four-time Superior Honor Award winner, and has twice received the Secretary of Defense’s Joint Civilian Service Commendation Medal, along with the Secretary of State’s Expeditionary Diplomacy Award.

She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Arlington, a Master of Military Operational Art and Science from the Air Command and Staff College, and a Master of Science in National Security Strategy from the National War College. She has also studied Dutch, French, and Arabic.

With her extensive diplomatic, operational, and leadership experience, Green is expected to play a key role in furthering U.S. relations with the Kurdistan Region during her tenure.
