The Kurdistan Democratic Party was founded on August 16, 1946, by Mulla Mustafa Barzani in the city of Mahabad. This day coincides with the birthday of President Barzani, which has given August 16th a special importance for the members and supporters of that party.

The main principles and goals of the Party:

First: As a democratic, popular, and progressive party, the Party represents the Kurdish nation and the people of the Kurdistan Region in Iraq. The Party relies on the path of the immortal Barzani, believes in the right to self-determination for the Kurdish people, and strives for their legitimate rights.

Second: The Party fully believes in the peaceful transfer of power and considers the people the source of all authorities. The party works for the transfer of power according to democratic principles, which are manifested in peaceful political competition and free and periodic elections.

Third: In the political arena of Iraq, the Party, as a pro-democracy party, works to establish the federal democratic system. This is based on the principles of genuine partnership, balance, and active participation to achieve the legitimate rights of the Kurdish people and Kurdistan within the framework of the permanent constitution of federal Iraq.

Fourth: The Party believes in the multi-component nature of the Kurdistan Region and recognizes the rights of the components. It also struggles to bring about a society that is founded on the basis of citizenship, equality, and respect for the rights of all, regardless of race, religion, sect, and cultural differences.

Fifth: The Party believes in the legitimacy of the cause of the Kurdish people and the other peoples of the region. In light of the principles of international law, the principles of human rights, and the established principles of the rights of peoples in the Charter of the United Nations and other international institutions, it strives for everyone to live together in peace and stability in the region and for the foundation of a dignified and respected life to be provided for all.
