ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – European and NATO leaders announced on Sunday that they will accompany Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Washington for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, in a show of unity aimed at advancing efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine and securing stronger U.S. defense commitments.

Leaders from Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Finland confirmed their participation, underscoring solidarity with Zelenskyy after his exclusion from Trump’s high-profile summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. Their presence at Monday’s White House meeting signals an attempt to steer the discussions toward a more constructive outcome than the strained session in February, when Trump publicly rebuked Zelenskyy during Oval Office talks.

Following his meeting with Trump, Putin suggested that Washington and its European allies might consider offering Ukraine security guarantees resembling NATO’s collective defense principles. U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff told CNN on Sunday that such a proposal is being explored as part of broader negotiations to resolve the 3½-year conflict.

The White House meeting could lead to a renewed commitment from the U.S. and European allies to provide Ukraine with enhanced security assurances. Additionally, it may result in a joint statement underscoring the importance of a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, emphasizing the need for Russia to respect Ukraine's sovereignty. Furthermore, the discussions might pave the way for increased military support or economic aid to Ukraine, strengthening its position in ongoing negotiations.
