ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Osman Risha, spokesperson for the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs, announced on Tuesday that the long-awaited process of unifying the Peshmerga units has reached its final stage, marking a major milestone in the Kurdistan Region’s defense reforms.

“The entire Peshmerga force will begin receiving their salaries through MyAccount initiative within the next two months,” Risha said, describing the step as a key part of the unification and reform program. He added that the number of Peshmerga divisions has now been finalized.

Risha emphasized that the instructions of Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani have been instrumental in advancing the reform agenda, noting that the leadership of both the 80th and 70th units has provided significant support for the process.

“In terms of reform, the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs has made commendable progress. The General Directorate of Budget and Programs (Military Accounting) now oversees all financial procedures across the ministry. Most Peshmerga personnel and officers already receive their salaries through this account,” he explained.

The unification of the Peshmerga forces has been a core objective of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), backed by international partners including the United States and members of the Global Coalition against ISIS. Washington has consistently urged the KRG to unify its forces under a single, professional command structure and has provided financial aid, equipment, and training to support this reform.

Risha also confirmed that US military assistance to the Peshmerga will continue, with new agreements planned for the coming years. He concluded by underlining the ministry’s commitment to enhancing the training and professionalization of the Peshmerga, ensuring they remain a capable and unified force for the security of the Kurdistan Region.

A unified command structure enhances operational efficiency by streamlining decision-making processes and reducing bureaucratic delays. It also fosters better coordination among units, ensuring that resources and personnel are deployed effectively across the region. Furthermore, a cohesive command structure increases accountability and transparency.
