ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — A critical infrastructure project vital to Erbil province's commercial and tourism sectors is entering its final phase, with the governor announcing that the strategic Kore-Shaqlawa-Qandil road and its associated tunnels are nearing completion ahead of the final paving stage.
The update on the major development, which modernizes a key segment of the historic Hamilton Road, was provided by Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw, signaling a significant step forward in enhancing the region's transportation network.
In a public update published on his personal page on the social media network Facebook on Saturday, Governor Omed Khoshnaw confirmed that work on the extensive project is now in its final stage.
He specified that the construction of the two-lane Kore-Shaqlawa-Qandil road and the completion of the two Mirawa and Mawaran tunnels have progressed significantly. The governor stated that the next major step, the paving of the new roadway, will begin soon, marking the transition from heavy construction to the project's finishing touches.
Governor Khoshnaw further detailed the scope of the ambitious undertaking, which is being implemented with a substantial budget of 90 billion Iraqi dinars. The project consists of constructing a modern, two-lane road with a length of ten kilometers.
According to the governor’s announcement, this work also includes the complex engineering task of completing the two tunnels, named Mawaran and Mirawa. In addition to the tunnels, the project design incorporates two major intersections, one structured as an overpass and the other as an underpass, which are designed to improve traffic flow and safety along the route.
The project's significance extends beyond its technical specifications, as it is positioned to enhance what the governor described as an important commercial and tourist route within the boundaries of Erbil province.
As an integral part of the famed Hamilton Road, the completion of this new section is expected to streamline transportation for commercial vehicles, facilitate regional trade, and improve accessibility for tourists and residents traveling through the scenic and economically important area. The upgrade is set to provide a more efficient and reliable connection, reinforcing its role as a key artery in Erbil's infrastructure.
