ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The United States on Thursday welcomed the decision by France, Germany, and the United Kingdom to trigger a “snapback” mechanism under UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which seeks the reimposition of international sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in an official statement, praised the initiative by the three European allies – known collectively as the E3 – describing it as a clear response to Tehran’s “significant non-performance” of its nuclear commitments.

Rubio noted that while the E3 could have launched the snapback process as early as 2019, they opted first for years of diplomatic engagement to offer Iran a peaceful alternative to a nuclear escalation. “The United States appreciates the leadership of our E3 allies in this effort,” he said.

According to the statement, Washington will work closely with European partners and other members of the UN Security Council in the coming weeks to ensure the snapback is fully implemented, in line with presidential directives under National Security Presidential Memorandum 2.

Rubio also stressed that the United States remains open to dialogue with Tehran, emphasizing that the sanctions move does not undermine Washington’s willingness to pursue a peaceful resolution. “Snapback does not contradict our earnest readiness for diplomacy, it only enhances it,” he said, urging Iranian leaders to take steps to ensure their country never develops a nuclear weapon and to “walk the path of peace” for the sake of their people’s prosperity.

France, Britain and Germany on Thursday triggered a mechanism to reimpose United Nations sanctions on Iran for failing to comply with commitments over its nuclear programme.

The move by the European powers marks a significant escalation in efforts to address Iran's non-compliance with the nuclear deal. By triggering the snapback mechanism, they aim to enforce stricter accountability and prevent further violations. This decision underscores the international community's commitment to maintaining nuclear non-proliferation and fostering regional stability.
