Trump drops travel ban appeal, will provide ‘modified’ order

The new US administration on Thursday dropped its appeal of a court ruling related to President Donald Trump’s immigration ban, adding it would issue a “modified” version.

WASHINGTON DC, United States (Kurdistan24) – The new US administration on Thursday dropped its appeal of a court ruling related to President Donald Trump’s immigration ban, adding it would issue a “modified” version.

The Justice Department announced Trump had decided to “rescind the [travel ban] and replace it with a new [one].”

The announcement, in a briefing filed with the Ninth Circuit Court in San Francisco, explained the new ban would “eliminate what the panel erroneously thought were constitutional concerns.”

The original travel ban issued last month was criticized worldwide, especially from the seven Muslim-majority countries who were targeted.

President Trump previously said the ban “was necessary to protect the United States from attacks by Islamist militants.”

The ban denied entry into the US for people from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen for 90 days.

Moreover, refugees from those countries were banned for an additional 30 days, with those from Syria banned indefinitely.

US District Judge James Robart in Seattle issued a suspension of the order nationwide on Feb. 3.

Meanwhile, President Trump said his new, “modified” ban “would be written to conform to legal rulings.”

“The new order is going to be very much tailored to what I consider to be a really bad decision,” Trump said in a news conference.

“We can tailor the order to that decision and get just about everything, in some ways more,” he added defiantly.

The Justice Department court filing mentioned the US President’s original travel ban would be “substantially revised,” without providing further details, Reuters reported.
