Iraqi casualties in June reach 700

Iraq had a total of 715 civilian casualties during the month of June, where 411 were killed and 294 more wounded.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) –The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) announced on Saturday that the number of civilian casualties in Iraq dropped during the month of June, with a total of 411 civilians killed and 294 wounded.

UNAMI's monthly report stated that most of the civilian casualties were from Nineveh, which was the worst affected governorate, where 289 were killed and 93 injured.

“Baghdad governorate followed with 22 killed and 88 injured, Salahadin governorate had 31 killed and 34 injured, and Babil had 24 killed and 26 injured,” UNAMI noted.

Moreover, the Health Directorate in Anbar said that “the governorate suffered a total of 54 civilian casualties 20 killed and 34 injured."

Iraq had a total of 824 civilian casualties during the month of May, where 354 were killed and 470 more wounded.

Jan Kubis, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq condemned the Islamic State's (IS) attacks on civilians.

Additionally, Kubis commended the efforts of the federal government of Iraq in protecting civilians as the battle in Mosul continues.

“We are seeing the end of Daesh in Mosul as Iraqi forces closed in on the terrorists in the city’s old quarters, but there are civilians who remain trapped in the area or are held as human shields by the terrorists,” he added.
