IS executes female Kurdish activist in Syria
KOBANI, Syrian Kurdistan (K24) – On Sunday, sources in the Islamic State (IS) leaked news to a Syrian Kurdish family in Kobani that the extremist militants executed their daughter in Raqqa Province, in northern Syria.Ruqayya Ahmad was executed for allegedly supporting some Syrian opposition parties, Ruqayya's cousin, Kamal told K24.
"Ruqayya lived in Raqqa with her family, contributed to the anti-Syrian-regime activities until IS overran Raqqa. However, she continued her activities secretly under the rule of IS," Kamal said.
Kamal added, "When IS displaced Kurds from Raqqa in June 2015, Ruqayya moved with her family to Kobani, and after one month she returned to Raqqa. She was later accused of cooperating with some Syrian opposition parties and working against IS in Raqqa. IS detained her in August 2015, and executed her in mid October 2015, but denied reporting her death."
Her cousin continued, "IS prevented Ruqayya's execution to be announced at the beginning, but after two and a half months, a member IS in Raqqa leaked the news to her family in Kobani."
Kamal explained that the person who leaked the news of Ruqayya's execution preferred to be unidentified as he is still in Raqqa and outwardly claims loyalty to IS in order to save his life.
It is noteworthy that Ruqayya used the name "Nisan Ibrahim" for her social media accounts and on the internet, and K24 learned that IS is still maintaining these accounts in hopes of finding her network of activists across Raqqa Province.
On January 13, 2014, IS took complete control of Raqqah and immediately executed Alawites and suspected supporters of the regime, destroyed Shia mosques, and Christian churches, such as the Armenian Catholic Church of the Martyrs, which has since been converted into one of the main IS headquarters.
