Theresa May faces defeat as lawmakers reject Brexit deal, 432 to 202

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – In a majority vote on Tuesday, lawmakers in the United Kingdom rejected Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal to separate from the European Union as the agreement now remains uncertain.

“The house has spoken and the government will listen,” May said immediately after the vote in parliament’s lower House of Commons where MPs voted by 432 to 202 to reject a deal which set out the terms of the UK’s exit from the EU on March 29.

The British leader said Tuesday’s vote was a clear indication “that the house does not support” the deal, but added that the development does not indicate whether or not the House of Commons “intends to honor the decision” by British citizens who voted in a 2016 referendum to leave the EU.  

May now faces a vote of no confidence on Wednesday following her defeat.

The main Labour opposition party leader, Jeremy Corbyn, introduced the vote of no confidence in the government which he said would allow the House of Commons to “give its verdict on the sheer incompetence of this government,” the BBC reported.

On June 23, 2016, millions of people went to ballot stations to submit their votes on whether they want the UK to remain in the EU or leave.

With a turnout rate of 72 percent, the “leave” vote won by 51.89 percent while the “remain” vote received 48.11 percent.
