ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Monday announced that it will issue preventative measures to curb the spread of new coronavirus strains in the region after authorities in Erbil recorded 19 cases.

KRG spokesman Jutyar Adil held a press conference following a meeting of the high committee to combat the deadly disease.

He said that the regional government had given provincial governments the authority to enact stricter measures at checkpoints between the Kurdistan Region and other parts of Iraq.

Erbil has also issued regulations to further reduce chances of transmission in government offices and further disincentivize large gatherings, Adil added.

“We call on all government institutions to oblige their employees to comply with the preventive measures,” the official said.

Adil continued, “We will prevent tourists from entering the Kurdistan Region. Only official government delegations will be allowed to enter the region.”

He explained, however, that schools and higher education institutions will remain open but have been directed to take precautions necessary as they see fit.

Adil also urged media organizations to help spread awareness about guidelines that curb the spread of the virus, including the even more contagious new strains that are quickly spreading globally.
