ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iraq’s Ministry of Health on Monday announced 6,346 new coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours.

This is the highest number of daily cases recorded by health authorities since announcing the country had entered a third wave of the pandemic, which an official described as "more deadly" than the previous two.

Infections reached all-time highs in April this year but steadily declined throughout May. Now cases appear to be increasing again, with authorities recording over 6,000 cases for three days in a row starting June 22.

The Ministry of Health said that 30 people died as a result of the disease throughout Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region. This brings the total number of infections in Iraq to 1,332,046, including 17,121 deaths.

Authorities complain that the major cause of continued soaring numbers is the general lack of commitment by a majority of the population to health guidelines and restrictions. Vaccination-hesitancy is also common in the Middle Eastern nation.
