US calls for urgent investigation after Amin Issa Amin's death in Kurdish-controlled Syria
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The United States on Thursday urged an immediate investigation into the death of a Syrian man in the custody of the Syrian Democratic Forces amid allegations of torture.
Amin Issa Amin died in prison in Hasakah after his arrest by security forces with the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria.
“We call for an immediate and transparent investigation,” Washington's Syrian Embassy tweeted in English and Arabic, saying it was “deeply concerned” by reports of Amin’s death.
“Anyone determined to be responsible for abuse or mistreatment of detainees must be held accountable,” it urged.
Amin’s cousin Hajar told Kurdistan 24 that the 35-year-old native of Derbisiye was arrested after witnessing an unspecified incident, and that his family repeatedly told local authorities that Amin needed medical treatment.
Graphic images appearing to show Amin’s tortured body have sparked calls for the administration to be held accountable for his death.
